Koala Mapping.

Plans for a massive new community development, west of Caboolture, have met a major hurdle just days after the formal announcement by the state government.

It has been discovered that 35.6% of the 6,400ha site, has been mapped as critical koala habitat.

The CEO of the Koala Foundation, Deborah Tabart, said she was totally unaware of the proposed development.

"I'm shocked that the government has signed off on such a major project without any consultation," Ms Tabart said.

Ms Tabart called on developers to publicly disclose where they planned to build the houses and other major infrastructure.

She also wanted to know how the development could go ahead without devastating the koala population.

Two up to be legal on Anzac Day

Queenslanders will now be able to enjoy a game of two-up in the State's RSL and Services clubs this Anzac Day after key legislation was passed in Parliament.

Attorney General Paul Lucas said legalising two-up was a win for diggers, their families, punters and RSL and Services clubs alike.

""Two up has been a long Australian tradition since colonial times," Mr Lucas said.

"It was particularly popular with Australian soldiers during the First and Second World Wars and has become an Anzac Day tradition.

"While technically illegal, police have traditionally turned a blind eye in recognition of the dedication current and ex servicemen and women have shown to Australia.

"What these laws represent is a sensible approach that formally allows punters to legally play not-for-profit two-up in RSL and Services clubs and in other approved liquor licensed venues with the permission of the RSL.

"It's a logical move which makes sure returned servicemen and women stay front and centre on Anzac Day.

"It ensures that any funds raised from entry fees are returned to the RSL to support ex-servicemen, women and their families which is what the RSL asked for."

Mr Lucas said the amendments to the Charitable and Non-Profit Gaming Act would also allow the RSL to request other days on which two-up could be allowed, such as Vietnam Veteran's Day through a simple change to regulation.

RSL Queensland CEO Chris McHugh welcomed the new laws.

"Although, to the best of my knowledge, no licensed RSL and Services Club has ever been prosecuted for playing two-up on Anzac Day, the potential is certainly there," Mr McHugh said.

"These are sensible amendments that meet the RSL's desire for all profits to go towards helping our members and their families."

Police Cars Graffitied at Party, Eatons Hill

Six youths were arrested for obstructing police and public nuisance after a disturbance at a large party in Eatons Hill overnight.

Police were called to a Montego Court residence around 9pm after reports of drunken behaviour and excessive noise.

Upon arrival, police attempted to shut down the party which had around 400 youths in attendance.

As police were directing people onto the street, a number of youths surrounded the parked police cars and police and allegedly sprayed graffiti on the police cars, and threw bottles and projectiles at the officers.

Police were able to disperse the crowd after about an hour.

Four police cars sustained damage during the incident. No-one was physically injured.

An 18-year-old Lawnton man was charged with obstruct police and public nuisance, and will appear in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on February 28.

The youths aged between 14 and 16 years will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

Investigations are continuing.

20 Youths in Altercation with Police at the Morayfield Shopping Centre

About 8pm police responded to a report of a male youth causing a disturbance at a Morayfield Shopping Centre.

The disturbance continued and the 16-year-old youth allegedly became involved in a physical altercation with a male constable as he attempted to take him into custody in relation to a public nuisance matter.

During the altercation the officer was knocked to the ground and was assisted by security personnel and members of the public.

The boy has been charged with one count each of serious assault police and contravene a move on direction as well as two counts of public nuisance.

He will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justices Act.

Residents Not Happy with the Narangba Quarry DA

Update: - Narangba residents have welcomed Boral's announcement ruling out a quarry. However, they still remain concerned that a development application (DA) lodged by a previous owner of land now owned by Boral could still be approved.

The Narangba quarry DA has not at this time been withdrawn by the applicant, Marcoola Investments.

This means the DA can still be approved by the Moreton Bay Regional Council, even though the current owner of the land (Boral) wants it withdrawn.

State Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan MP has welcomed a submission which alleviates community concern by effectively ruling out a proposed new quarry in the Narangba West area.

“As local people may be aware, an application for a new quarry in the Narangba West area is currently being considered by the Moreton Bay Regional Council,” Mr Ryan said.

“The application was made by Marcoola Investments Pty Ltd (Marcoola) in 2010. However, the majority of the land that is the subject of the application is now owned by Boral Resources (Qld) Pty Limited (Boral).

“For the last few years, I have been working on a strategy that will help buffer the residential areas of Narangba from the impact of the existing quarry in the Narangba West area and the quarry trucks on local roads.

“So when local people asked me to help them with their campaign in respect of this application, I took steps to raise the concerns of our community directly with Boral.

“Over the last month or so, I have discussed with Boral (on a number of occasions) that there are a large number of people in our community that are worried about the prospects of another quarry in the Narangba West area.”

Following Mr Ryan’s discussions, Boral has now made a formal submission to the Moreton Bay Regional Council which states:

“(that Boral) does not intend to pursue or implement the development proposed by this development application in the event that the application is approved (by the Moreton Bay Regional Council). If the (legislation) so provided, Boral would formally withdraw its consent to the development application being made over its land” (emphasis added).

“On behalf of our community, I take this opportunity to thank Boral for listening and responding to the concerns of local people.

Update: Police have located a missing 14-year-old boy who was reported missing from Deception Bay earlier this week.

He was found safe and well earlier this morning.

Police would like to thank members of the public and the media for their assistance in this matter.

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate a 14-year-old Deception Bay boy who left home on January 22.

Michael Buckley was last seen by police on January 23 at the Chermside bus interchange.

He is described as being Caucasian in appearance, around 165cm tall with a heavy build, long afro-style brown hair and green eyes.

He was wearing a pink t-shirt, a silver baseball cap and black skate shoes and was in possession of a black and silver scooter when he left home.

His family holds concerns for his wellbeing as he has not made contact with them.

LNP: Armed robberies spread under Labor

THE long-term Labor government has been accused of throwing-in the towel on violent crime following the spate of 39 armed hold-ups across Queensland in the past month.

LNP Shadow Minister for Police, Corrective Services & Emergency Services John-Paul Langbroek said after 20 years, Labor had nothing to offer with retiring Police Minister Neil Roberts continuing his shameful denial of the rise in armed robberies.

“Thugs armed with handguns, knives, scissors and syringes are running rampant holding-up and terrorising small businesses, take-away stores and pubs with 39 armed robberies in the past 30 days after 29 in December,” Mr Langbroek said.

“But Anna Bligh and her Police Minister have walked away from tackling armed crime.

“Neither has any interest in grassroots crime prevention – increasing help to businesses considered ‘soft targets’ and bolstering frontline police numbers.

“All Labor wants to do is deny the facts – when the government’s own Police Statistical annual report confirms the rise in armed robberies.

“Of the 465 reported armed robberies in 2010/11, almost half, or 214 went unsolved.

“We need to be vigilant when it comes to armed robberies and armed violence.

“The LNP has promised to revitalise frontline police and provide a permanent major crime squad for the Gold Coast.

“After 20 years Labor and its silent local MPs still can’t get this right.

“It’s time for change. It’s time to get Queensland back on track.”

Burglary charges, Kallangur

Police have charged a 16-year-old Burpengary male youth with a number of offences including burglary with violence after four homes at Kallangur were allegedly broken into overnight.

It will be alleged that the youth broke into homes in Goshaw Drive, Skylark Court, Balstrup Road and Brolga Avenue, between 1am and 6.30am and stole property.

It will be further alleged that during one of the break-ins the youth produced a replica firearm and threatened a man before fleeing on foot. No one was injured.

Following one of the break-ins, residents from the house chased the youth through backyards before losing sight of him.

Extensive searches by police on foot, including a dog squad unit, in periods of heavy rainfall were conducted in the area overnight with police locating the youth in the yard of a house in Lyrebird Way around 7.50am.

The male allegedly ran at officers and a Taser was deployed. He was taken into custody without further incident and will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justices Act.

Police investigations are continuing.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is urging residents to continue to plan and prepare for localised flooding amid predications the region will continue to experience moderate to heavy rainfall over the coming days.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said council and the Local Disaster Control Centre were continuing to closely monitor rainfall, dam release and flood information. A Local Disaster Management Group meeting was held at 11am today.

"Although the rain has eased in some areas, the region is still on track to receive 50 to 100mm today – with more to follow throughout the rest of the week,” Mayor Sutherland said.

"Flooding has receded in a number of local catchments around Burpengary and Caboolture but the Stanley River around Woodford is continuing to rise slowly and we will be watching this situation very closely as well as possible impacts on surrounding roadways.

“Releases at the North Pine Dam have been wound back but Youngs Crossing Road is likely to remain closed for some time due to inflows from Sidling Creek.”

Around 90 roads are closed while 50 roads are passable with care.

Mayor Sutherland said three further evacuation centres had opened at Caboolture, Morayfield and Woodford to support centres at Narangba and Deception Bay that remained open overnight.

“With plenty of wet weather still on the cards and a saturated catchment, we are continuing to make sure we have appropriate arrangements in place,” Mayor Sutherland said.

Mayor Sutherland said 264 requests for assistance had been received by the SES in the last 24 hours.

“Around 45 SES volunteers are in the field today mainly assisting with leaking roofs and sandbagging,” Mayor Sutherland said.

Preparing for flooding

Unlawful wounding, Deception Bay

Police are investigating an incident in which a youth sustained a cut to this neck at Deception Bay on January 21.

Initial information suggests around 11.30pm, a 16-year-old boy from NSW was at a sporting field with friends on Government Street. The boy was allegedly punched in the neck by a man with a sharp object causing a cut.

The boy attended Redcliffe Hospital for treatment to a non-life threatening injury.

The man is described as Caucasian, 173cms tall, short dark hair and of a slim build. He was wearing a black hooded jumper and black pants.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
